Paruppu Vadai - Masal Vadai - Fried Channa Dal Patties - Indian Falefel

Paruppu Vadai is a savory fritter made from lentils. You don't need too much ingredients to make this. We can take this as tea-time snacks or use in salad as its protein rich. I hope you will love this recipe and let me know what you think.

Ingredients

  • Kadalai paruppu / Channa dal - 1 cup
  • Onions - 2
  • Green Chilies - 4
  • Garlic - 6 pods
  • Ginger - 1 inch
  • Curry leaves - 1 string
  • Coriander leaves - handful
  • Salt as per taste
  • Oil for deep frying

Method

  1. Soak channa dal for 2 to 3 hours. Drain it. Add this to a blender and make into a coarse batter. Don’t make it into a fine paste. You should have whole dal here and there.Take it in a bowl.
  2. Grind ginger, garlic and fennel seeds to a rough paste without adding water. Add this to the batter and mix well.
  3. Now add in onions, chilli and curry leaves in this and mix well.
  4. Heat oil for deep frying.
  5. Make equal sized balls out of the mix and flatten it.
  6. Heat oil in a pan. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop a little batter into the oil, if it raises to the surface immediately, the oil is hot enough to fry the vadas.
  7. Reduce the flame to medium and deep fry all the balls. Once deep fried place it in a kitchen towel to drain off the excess oil.
