Kerala Prawns Fry recipe - Nadan Chemmeen Varuthathu

Prawns fry using coconut oil, anybody say they don't like!! Never the best taste with traditional Kerala touch, the most important point in making a prawn recipe is cleaning and deveining the prawns. Once that is done, the prawn recipes don’t require lots of time and are quite simple dishes.

Here I'm sharing the recipe which was told by my aunty, she is from trissur. I will upload more of her traditional recipes in future.

Ingredients

  • Prawns / Shrimp – 1 kg
  • Kudampuli – 1 (I don't get at my place, I used normal puli here)
  • Red chilly powder – 2 tbsp
  • Onion – 2
  • Ginger – I inch Crushed
  • Garlic – 10 Crushed
  • Tomato – 1
  • Turmeric powder - ¼ tsp
  • Coriander powder - ½ tsp
  • Red chilly powder – 1 tbsp
  • Garam masala - 1 tsp
  • Salt as per taste
  • Coconut oil - 3 tbsp

Method

  1. Cook shrimp along with kudampuli, red chilly powder, salt and enough water in a clay pot (it gives the traditional taste).
  2. Once the shrimp is cooked and becomes dry, switch off and set aside.
  3. Heat coconut oil in a pan.
  4. Add onion, once the onion turns golden, add ginger, garlic and salt.
  5. Put simmer and add turmeric powder. Sauté till the raw smell goes away.
  6. Add coriander powder and sauté till the raw smell goes away.
  7. Add red chilly powder and pepper powder and sauté till the raw smell goes away.
  8. Add tomatoes.
  9. Cover and cook on medium flame till the tomatoes are done.
  10. Add garam masala.
  11. Remove kudampuli from the cooked shrimp and add the rest to the masala.
  12. Mix well. Cover and cook on medium flame for 5 minutes or till the oil separates.

Heat coconut oil

Add onions and fry it.

Add all masalas
